Who doesn't want to be as cosy as a baby yak on the Mongolian steppes? The downy fibre harvested from Mongolian yaks provides a unique mix of softness and durability that's perfect for warm woolly garments. Yaks have different layers in their wool coats, much like goats. ULA + LIA only uses the finest, softest down layer that 1-3 year old yaks produce in the middle of bitter winters. The guard hairs that remain after the brushing process are separated from the downy ‘yak cashmere’ before being spun into yarn made specifically for knitting and crochet.
As this yarn is produced by small manufacturers in Mongolia there is no infrastructure to wash the skeins once they are spun. This means that there will still be some spinning oils on them. To bring out the full softness and drape you would expect from luxury fibres, you must first wash and block your finished item. We recommend that you follow the washing instructions provided by Ula + Lia on their website.
