By partnering with the Sustainable Cashmere Union Ula + Lia work with sustainability-focused herder cooperatives to procure fibre that is traceable all the way back to the communities it comes from, which are marked as such on their labels.

By working with herder cooperatives that are focused on development and traceability, they are able to implement breeding programs to increase fibre quality and income for the families as opposed to having their premium fibre mixed with other batches from surrounding areas. From increasing health care to business projects aimed at increasing and diversifying income sources, their partner cooperatives work with the SCU to invest the added income to fit their needs best.

Their cashmere comes only from the finest wool from the underside of the goat’s belly and chin. Due to the small amount of cashmere that can be brushed from each goat in the spring, cashmere is rare and highly sought after.

This yarn is produced by small manufacturers in Mongolia and there is no infrastructure to wash the skeins after spinning. This means that there will still be some spinning oils on the yarn. To bring out the full softness and drape you would expect from luxury fibres, you must first wash and block your finished item.
