Knitting separate blocks of colour - known as Intarsia - is a very popular and fun technique to add impact, interest and colour in any project. Intarsia has come a long way from the sweaters from the 1980s with so many designers using it to create beautiful modern designs - just take a look at Dee Hardwicke and Anna Husemann for inspiration.
In this workshop, Samira will teach you the techniques involved in making neat, smooth colour changes and how to correct or add colourful finishing details on your project using Swiss Darning.
Materials & requirements
You need to be independently confident in knitting basics such as casting on, knit and casting off.
Included in the class:
- Instruction from an experienced teacher
- Tea, coffee and snacks
You will also need:
- Four contrasting colours of DK yarn in wool or wool blend - 50g each.

Small class size
With only six people in the class you will receive individual attention so that you master both Intarsia and Swiss darning, allowing you to tackle patterns that use both skills once you leave the class.
Date, time and location
- Saturday 13th February 2027, 10 am - 1 pm
Please arrive around 5 - 10 minutes before the start of the class so you have time to get settled and get refreshments. As this a half day class, there will not be a scheduled break during the teaching time.

Samira Hill
Samira Hill is a former professional archaeologist based in the beautiful Scottish Borders. After spending years digging and traveling around the world (always with her knitting), Samira has been teaching knitting and crochet professionally to all ages, from primary school children to adults since 2013. Samira teaches most aspects of knitting and crochet both online and in person throughout Scotland, and loves to empower crafters with new skills and not to be deterred by techniques that “look hard”.
When not teaching,
Samira is a published designer of knitting, crochet and Tunisian crochet patterns as
Eildon Hills Designs, with her patterns featured in UK and worldwide publications such as The Journal of Scottish Yarns, Moorit Magazine, and Knitting Magazine, as well as self-published patterns on Ravelry.
Samira is also a knitting and crochet technical editor for various independent designers and prestigious knitting and crochet publications, including the Shetland Wool Week Annual and the Journal of Scottish Yarns.
Samira is also the organiser of the annual Tangled Galashiels Fibre Festival in the Scottish Borders.
